An orange is divided into three equal parts. What fraction does each part represent?
So let’s start with our orange, and we’ll try to sketch out three equal pieces. So now we have a sketch of three pieces of one orange. Remember that when we’re writing fractions, we’re talking about a part compared to the whole. The whole orange here is divided into three pieces. This means the denominator of our fraction will be three. And we’re interested in each part, so one part. Each part would represent one-third of the orange.
If our orange is divided into three equal parts and we wanna know what fraction each part represents, we would say each part can be represented by the fraction one-third.
