Complete the following statement. During the day, π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž leaflets are primarily held in blank position. (A) A vertical, (B) an upward, (C) a horizontal, or (D) a coiled.

While all living organisms are interesting in their own way, π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž π‘π‘’π‘‘π‘–π‘π‘Ž, also called the sensitive plant or the touch-me-not plant, is a unique and fascinating organism. The species name π‘π‘’π‘‘π‘–π‘π‘Ž comes from the Latin word meaning shy or shrinking.

In order to understand why, we first have to discuss some terms relating to the plant’s leaves. The leaves of a π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž plant are called compound leaves. They are made up of a petiole and several distinct leaflets. Each leaflet is made up of a rachis to which photosynthetic pinnules are attached. During the daytime or in the absence of touch, the leaflets are held open in a horizontal position in order to capture as much sunlight as possible for photosynthesis.

The π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž plant responds to stimuli like touch by rapidly folding up its leaflets and drooping its rachises and petioles within just a few seconds. The π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž plant also exhibits the same reaction in response to a reduction in light intensity at the onset of night, when there is no light around to be captured for photosynthesis.

Now we can answer our question correctly. During the day, π‘€π‘–π‘šπ‘œπ‘ π‘Ž leaflets are primarily held in a horizontal position. So the correct answer is (C), a horizontal.
