Order these numbers from greatest
to least. 643, 663, and 647.
In this question, we’re shown three
three-digit numbers. And we have to order them from
greatest to least. So we need to start by writing down
the number which is worth the most and finish with the number which is worth the
least.
Which of our three three-digit
numbers is worth the most? We know that three-digit numbers
have a hundreds, tens, and ones digit. And we’re looking for the number
which is worth the most. So let’s start by comparing the
hundreds digit in each of our numbers. Did you notice that the hundreds
digit for each of our three numbers is a six? 643 has six hundreds, so does 663
and 647. This isn’t much help. We need to move to the right to the
next digit and compare the number of tens.
643 has four tens, which are worth
40. 663 has six tens, which are worth
60. And 647 has four tens, which are
worth 40. We know that 60 is greater than
40. Six hundred and six tens are worth
more than six hundred and four tens. So the number with the greatest
value is 663.
Now, we need to find the number
which is worth the least. Is it 643 or 647? Did you notice that both of these
numbers have the same amount of hundreds and the same amount of tens? So we’re going to have to compare
the ones digit. The number 643 has three ones. And the number 647 has seven
ones. We know that seven is greater than
three, so we know that 647 is greater than 643. Now we can write all of our numbers
in the correct order. The numbers from greatest to least
are 663, 647, and 643. We ordered these numbers from
greatest to least using our knowledge of place value.
