What is the number six units to the left of negative two on a number line?

In order to answer this question, we can consider the number line from negative 10 to positive 10. The negative numbers are to the left of zero, whereas the positive numbers are to the right. Our starting position for this question is negative two, as shown in pink on the number line. We were asked to move six units to the left. Moving six units to the left takes us to negative eight.

We can therefore say that negative eight is six units to the left of negative two. An alternative method for solving this problem would be to subtract six from negative two. This also gives us an answer of negative eight. Negative two minus six equals negative eight.
