Which of the following decimals has the same value as three-eighths? Circle your answer. Is it 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, or 0.625?

The easiest way to convert any fraction into a decimal is to divide the numerator by the denominator as the line in a fraction means divide. In this question, we need to divide three by eight. One way of doing this is using the bus stop method. We put a three underneath the bus stop and the eight outside. Eight does not divide into three. And there are three left over. We need to carry a three and put a decimal point into our question and answer line.

30 divided by three is equal to three remainder six as eight multiplied by three equals 24. And 30 minus 24 is equal to six. Next, we need to divide 60 by eight. This gives us seven remainder four. We put a seven on the answer line and carry the four. Finally, 40 divided by eight is equal to five as eight multiplied by five is 40. This means that three divided by eight is equal to 0.375. The decimal that has the same value as three-eighths is 0.375.

We could also answer this question by considering some common fraction to decimal conversions that we know. We know that one-half is equal to 0.5. Halving one-half gives us a quarter. Therefore, the decimal equivalent of one-quarter is a half of 0.5. A half of 50 is equal to 25. Therefore, the decimal equivalent to a quarter is 0.25. Halving a quarter gives us one-eighth. Therefore, the decimal that is equivalent to one-eighth will be a half of 0.25. 0.25 is the same as 0.250. As a half of 250 is 125, then a half of 0.25 is 0.125. We have now proved that one-quarter is equal to 0.25. And one-eighth is equal to 0.125. This means that these two answers are not the same as three-eighths.

The fraction three-eighths is shaded in pink. We know that one-eighth is 0.125. Therefore, three-eighths will be equal to 0.125 multiplied by three. Three multiplied by five is equal to 15. We put a five in the thousandths column and carry the one. Three multiplied by two is equal to six. Adding the one we carried gives us seven. This goes in the hundredths column. Three multiplied by one is equal to three. So there’s a three in the tenths column. Finally, three multiplied by zero is equal to zero. So we have a zero in the units column. Once again, we have proved that the decimal that has the same value as three-eighths is 0.375.
