Find the difference. Hint, jump back in tens and ones on a number line. 71 take away 24 equals what?

We have to find the difference between 71 and 24. And the question tells us to use a number line to jump back. This is the same as subtracting, or taking away. So, we need to start at 71 and count back in tens and ones until we’ve taken away 24.

Let’s start by taking away 10. 71 take away 10 is 61. Remember, we’re taking away 24, which has two 10s. We’ve taken away one 10. We need to take away one more. 61 take away 10 is 51. We’ve taken away the two 10s. Now we just need to take away the four ones. 51, 50, 49, 48, 47. 71 take away 24 is 47. We started at 71 on the number line, and we counted back two 10s and four ones. 24 has two 10s and four ones. 71 take away 24 is 47.
