What is the main function of
nervous tissue? (A) To provide a protective barrier
for internal and external surfaces. (B) To receive information from
stimuli and communicate with the spinal cord and brain via electrical impulses. (C) To bind, support, and protect
structures within the body. Or (D) to contract and move parts
of the body.
Nervous tissue is the tissue
component of the nervous system, which is responsible for regulating and controlling
bodily functions and activity. There are two main cell types which
make up nervous tissue. These are neurons, which receive
and transmit electrical impulses, and glia, which support neurons by providing them
with nutrients and assisting with the propagation of nerve impulses.
A sensory neuron will receive
information from a stimulus, such as a touch, taste, smell, or temperature change,
to name a few. It then transmits this information,
by way of electrical impulses, to the brain and spinal cord so they can coordinate
an appropriate response.
We have therefore determined that
the correct answer is (B). The main function of nervous tissue
is to receive information from stimuli and communicate with the spinal cord and
brain via electrical impulses.
