How many 10s are there in 96?

Let’s listen to that question again. How many 10s are there in 96? First, let’s think about how we’d write the number 96 using numbers. First, we’d write the digit nine and then a six, 96. The nine stands for nine tens or 90. And the six stands for six ones or six. So we can see that the number 96 has nine tens. If we were to make the number 96 out of place value counters, we need nine 10s and six ones. Nine 10s equal 90.

So we know that, in the number 96, there are nine 10s.
