One more than four is five. One less than nine is eight. What is one more than six? What is one less than two?

Finding one more than a number is the same as adding one. When we add on a number line, we count forward. Finding one less than a number is the same as taking away one. When we take away one using a number line, we need to count back one. The first part of our question asks us to find one more than six. This is the same as saying six plus one. So, to find six plus one, we need to start at six on the number line and count forward one more. One more than six is seven. Six and one more is seven.

Now, we need to find the number which is one less than two. And we know to find one less than a number, we count back one on the number line. So, we need to start at number two and count back one. One less than two, or two take away one, equals one. One more than six is seven. And one less than two is one. To find one more than a number, we count forward one on the number line. And to find one less, we count back one.
