True or False: Ancient Egyptians used joints to help construct temples and tombs as
well as make obelisks.
A joint is a fracture in a rock mass along which no observable movement has
occurred. Joints form as the result of tensional forces created by tectonic movement when
pressure is released from rocks or from the cooling of rocks. Joints can form in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks but only occur in
competent and brittle rocks, like limestone or granite.
Ancient Egyptians exploited naturally jointed rocks. They used preexisting joints to help split up rock into blocks that were than used
for constructing temples, tombs, and obelisks. So, the statement “Ancient Egyptians used joints to help construct temples and tombs
as well as make obelisks” is true.
