The total cost of a meal in a restaurant is 41 dollars 87 cents, including tax. If Charlotte left eight dollars for a tip, estimate the percentage of her tip.

We were told in the question that the total bill was 41 dollars and 87 cents. The tip that Charlotte left was equal to eight dollars. This means that the percentage tip is eight out of or divided by 41.87 multiplied by 100.

We’re multiplying by 100 as the word percent means out of 100. Typing this into the calculator gives us 19.106759 and so on.

We were asked to estimate the percentage. Therefore, it is sensible to round this answer to the nearest whole number or integer. The deciding number is the one immediately after the decimal point. As this is less than five, we will round down. 19.106759 rounded to the nearest whole number is equal to 19 percent.

We can therefore say that the percentage that Charlotte tipped is 19 percent.
