Michael started putting counters into ten frames to help him add. Can you find the total? Six plus four plus seven.

We can see that Michael has already started to put counters into the ten frames. He’s put the six orange counters into one ten frame and the four blue counters into the same ten frame. Six and four makes 10. So we have one complete ten frame. We’ve made one ten. Now, we just need to add the seven counters into the next ten frame. Now, we have 10 in the first ten frame and seven more. 10 plus seven equals 17. Six plus four plus seven equals 17. First Michael found a pair of numbers which made 10. Six and four make 10. And then we added the seven green counters. 10 and seven equals 17. Six plus four plus seven is 17.
