Which of the following satisfies the relation 𝑥 minus 𝑦 is equal to negative 10? Is it (A) nine, negative one; (B) negative two, negative two; (C) negative five, negative 15; (D) negative 12, negative two; or (E) negative 16, six?

All five of our options are written as a coordinate pair, where the first value is 𝑥 and the second value is 𝑦. We can substitute each of these pairs of values into the equation to see if we get an answer of negative 10. For option (A), we need to subtract negative one from nine. Subtracting negative one is the same as adding one. Nine plus one is equal to 10. So, this is not the correct answer.

In option (B), we need to subtract negative two from negative two. This is the same as adding two to negative two. As this equals zero, option (B) is not correct.

In option (C), we need to subtract negative 15 from negative five. Negative five plus 15 is equal to 10. Option (C) is also not correct.

In option (D), we are subtracting negative two from negative 12. This is the same as negative 12 plus two. This does give us an answer of negative 10. This suggests that option (D) is the correct answer.

We will check option (E) just in case. In this option, we need to subtract six from negative 16. This is equal to negative 22, which is not equal to negative 10.

The coordinate pair that satisfies the relation 𝑥 minus 𝑦 is equal to negative 10 is (D) negative 12, negative two.
