Which of these fractions is not equivalent to five-twelfths? 10 over 24, 15 over 36, 20 over 44, or 25 over 60.

Well, let’s take a look at each of the fractions in turn. So first of all, we have 10 over 24. So let’s think we’ve got five over 12. And if it’s equivalent, it means that we can actually get from five over 12 to 10 over 24 by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number or dividing them by the same number.

Well, if we multiply the numerator by two, we get 10. And if we do the same to the denominator, we get 24. So therefore, we get 10 over 24. So we can say that 10 over 24 is equivalent to five over 12.

So next, we’ll take a look at 15 over 36. And we need to see if we can convert five over 12 to 15 over 36 by multiplying or dividing our numerator and denominator by the same value. Well, if we look at the numerator, the numerator is 15. Well, five goes into 15 three times. So five multiplied by three is 15. Then if we multiply 12 by three, you will get 36. So therefore five over 12 and 15 over 36 are equivalent fractions because if you multiply the numerator and denominator by three, you get from five over 12 to 15 over 36. Okay, so this is equivalent. So therefore, it’s not the correct answer.

Let’s move on to the next one, which is 20 over 44. Well, now if we look at 20 over 44, we’ve got our five over 12. So let’s first see how many fives go into 20. Well, it’s four. So let’s try and multiply the numerator and denominator by four. But when we do that, we get 20 over 48. And that’s because four multiplied by five is 20, and four multiplied by 12 is 48. And we can work out 12 multiplied by four by doing four multiplied by 10 is 40, four multiplied by two is eight, and adding them together to give us our 48.

Well, we can see that this is not the same as 20 over 44. So therefore, they are not equivalent. So this looks like it’s gonna be our correct answer. But what we’re gonna do is check the final one just to make sure.

Well, again, if we wanna see if we can convert from five over 12 to 25 over 60, so are they equivalent? Well, how many fives go into 25? Well, it’s five. So we’re gonna multiply the numerator and denominator by five. Well, if we multiply the denominator by five, we get 60. And that’s because five multiplied by 12 is 60. And we could work that out with five multiplied by 10 is 50, five multiplied by two is 10. Add them together, you get 60. So therefore, we can say that 25 over 60 is equivalent to five over 12.

So in answer to the question, the fraction that is not equivalent to five over 12 is 20 over 44.
