A fair die is rolled 956 times. Calculate the expected number of times an even number is rolled.
A fair die is a cube with six sides with labels one through six. To calculate the expected number of times an even number is rolled, we first need to know how many even numbers are on the die. Two, four, and six are our even values.
On the die, there are three even values out of the six total values. We can simplify three over six to one-half. One-half of the numbers are even. So we take the 956 times we’re going to roll, and we multiply that by one-half, the chances of rolling an even number. 956 times one-half equals 478. The expected number of times an even number is rolled equals 478.
