One-eighth of a notebook has five pages. How many pages does the whole notebook have?
We’re told that one-eighth of a notebook has five pages. And this bar model represents the notebook. We’ve divided the notebook or the bar into eight equal parts or eighths. And we know that each eighth is five pages. So to work out how many pages there are in total in the notebook, we need to work out eight lots of five. Let’s count in fives. Five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40. Eight lots of five or eight times five is 40.
If one-eighth of a notebook has five pages, then the whole notebook will have 40 pages. Eight-eighths make a whole notebook. Eight times five is 40.
