What is the median of the following numbers: 11, 11, eight, eight, nine, nine?

The median is the middle value in a sorted list. The list can be sorted ascending or descending. That’s our first step here. This list has not been sorted. Let’s first sort our list in ascending order from least to greatest.

The smallest values are eights, and we have two of those. Next come nine, and we have two of those values. And the largest value is 11; we have two of those.

If we draw a line in the middle of these values, it would go here. There would be three numbers on the left and three numbers on the right. Our median value falls between nine and nine. Because nine is the same value on either side of the median, the median is exactly nine.
