Chloe shared her 73 raisins with her friend. If her friend ate 26 raisins, how many did Chloe eat?

We can highlight the key numbers in the question. Chloe had 73 raisins to begin with and her friend ate 26. We know this is minus because Chloe gave away her raisins. So she will have less.

If we calculate 73 minus 26, that will tell us the number of raisins that Chloe ate. We can record our calculation as column subtraction and we always start in the ones place. Three minus six. Since three is less than six, we need to regroup or in other words take a 10 from the 10s place and put it in the ones place. So we’ve taken one from the 10s, seven take away one is six. And we move that one across into the ones place.

Now, we can calculate 13 minus six, which makes seven. And moving into the 10s place, we need to work out six minus two which equals four. 73 minus 26 equals 47. We found our answer by calculating 73 minus 26 using column subtraction.
