Look at these numbers. 15, 11, and 18. Which is the greatest number? Which is the smallest number?

We can use a place value chart to help us compare the numbers. 15 has one ten frame. So we can write one in the tens column. And it has five more counters or five ones. So we can write five in the ones place. 11 has one ten frame. So we can write one in the tens place. And it has one more counter. So we can write one in the ones place. And 18 has one ten and eight ones.

Now, we can compare the value of each number. All of the numbers have one ten. If we look at the ones digit, we can see that number 18 has the most ones — eight ones. So the greatest number is number 18.

Now, we need to find the smallest number. So we need to find the number with the least ones. Number 11 has a one in the ones place. So this is the smallest number.

There were three numbers: 15, 11, and 18. The greatest number is 18 and the smallest number is 11.
