The diagram shows a simple outline of the female reproductive system. What number indicates the vagina?

Let’s go over the function of each of these structures in the female reproductive system in order to answer our question. We’ll start with the ovaries, indicated as number 5. These are the organs responsible for making an egg cell, or ovum. Each month, a single ovum is released from the ovaries by a process called ovulation. This egg cell is released to a part of the female reproductive system called the Fallopian tube, sometimes called the oviduct. This is indicated by the number 1.

The ovum moves along the Fallopian tube where it can combine with, or be fertilized by, a sperm cell. Sperm can be introduced after sexual intercourse. The fertilized ovum continues to move along the Fallopian tube toward the next structure called the uterus. This is represented by number 2. Inside the uterus, a fertilized egg cell can implant into the uterine lining. This is what starts a pregnancy. In the uterus, the baby can develop until it’s born.

The cervix is a muscular ring of tissue that can hold the baby in place while it’s developing. We can see the cervix as number 3. And finally, number 4 indicates the vagina. This is a muscular tube that is involved in sexual reproduction. Here is where semen can be deposited, which contains sperm cells that can fertilize the ovum. Therefore, the number that indicates the vagina is number 4.
