Convert one-seventh to a decimal.

In this question, we are asked to convert a fraction to a decimal. And whilst there are many ways to do this, we will do so by using a calculator. We can either use the fraction button and then type the digits one and seven into the numerator and denominator, respectively. Or we could simply type in one divided by seven. In either case, we proceed after this by pressing the equals button. Finally, we press the button to convert from the standard output form to a decimal, denoted SD.

The output on the calculator will then look as follows. This means that the digits one, four, two, eight, five, and seven are repeating. And as such, this is the decimal 0.142857 recurring. Alternative notation to writing a dot above the first and last digit that repeat is to draw a bar from the first repeating digit to the last as shown. Either of these are appropriate ways to write the final answer. The fraction one-seventh is equivalent to 0.142857 recurring.
