The table shows the marks of 100 students in a recent science exam. How many students received 40 marks or more?

The grouped frequency table shows the marks of 100 students in a science test. We are asked to calculate how many of the students scored 40 marks or more.

The penultimate group shows those students that received 40 to 49 marks. There were 23 of these students, and they all scored 40 marks or more. The final group shows those students who received 50 marks or more in the exam. There were 18 of these students, and they clearly also scored more than 40 marks. The total number of students that received 40 marks or more is therefore equal to 23 plus 18, which is equal to 41.

We can therefore conclude that 41 out of the 100 students received 40 marks or more.
