95 percent of 240 equals what?
We know that 100 percent take away five percent is 95 percent. So we could find five percent of 240 and subtract this from 240 to tell us what 95 percent is. 240 divided by 10 is 24. So 10 percent of 240 is 24 and half of 24 is 12. So five percent of 240 is 12. 240 subtract 12 is 228. So 95 percent of 240 is 228.
We could also calculate the answer by finding 90 percent of 240 and then finding five percent and then adding these two amounts together. We already know that 10 percent of 240 is 24. So if we multiply 24 by nine, that will tell us 90 percent. Nine times four is 36 and nine times two is 18 plus the three we exchanged makes 21. So 90 percent of 240 is 216 and five percent of 240 is 12. 216 plus 12 is 228. 95 percent of 240 is 228.
We used two different strategies to find the answer. First, we found five percent and subtracted it from 240. And our second strategy was to find 90 percent then five percent of 240 and add the totals together. Both our methods gave us the same answer of 228.
