What do the organisms shown in the figure have in common? (A) They all live in aquatic habitats. (B) They all have roots, stems, and leaves. (C) They all reproduce using spores. (D) They all reproduce using flowers. Or (E) they all have chlorophyll.

This question is asking about a common feature amongst the group of organisms pictured in the question, which are all plants. So, let’s go through each of the answer choices to see which statement option applies to them.

Option (A) suggests that they all live in aquatic habitats, in other words, live in water. Many aquatic plants do not have true roots as they do not need to be anchored in the soil and they do not need them to absorb water. We can see that this plant here is obviously not an aquatic plant as it is growing in a pot of soil. Therefore, this statement can’t be true, and we will rule it out.

Option (B) suggests they all have roots, stems, and leaves, but we cannot actually tell this just from the pictures, as not all of the plant is shown. This plant, however, is actually an aquatic nonvascular plant so does not have true roots, stems, and leaves. We can therefore rule out option (B).

One of the features of plants is that they all reproduce using spores or flowers. Option (C) suggests that all these plants reproduce by spores. We can see that this is not true as there are at least two plants that have flowers and will reproduce using these. We can therefore rule out this option.

Option (D) suggests they all reproduce using flowers, but we cannot tell this solely from the pictures given, as plants do not keep their flowers all year round. Therefore, this could be correct, so we will have a look at the last option to see whether we can rule that one out.

The last option suggests that all the plants have chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in chloroplasts in plant cells. Two common features of all plants is that they are multicellular and their cells contain chloroplasts. The chlorophyll in chloroplasts traps sunlight energy, and it is this energy that the plants then use to make their own food by a process called photosynthesis. We can see that all these plants are green, which suggests they all contain chlorophyll.

So we now know that the correct answer is option (E). The feature that the organisms shown in the figure have in common is they all have chlorophyll.
