Glucose is a sugar required by the human body for energy. What is the primary source of glucose for humans? (A) Proteins in the diet, (B) carbohydrates in the diet, (C) carbon in carbon dioxide, (D) sugars and minerals in water, (E) oxygen in the air.

Let’s review glucose and how humans obtain it for energy. The structure of glucose is shown here and can be broken down and used for energy in our body. This is an example of a simple sugar because it only contains a single-ring structure. A complex sugar, like starch, is made up of many repeating glucose molecules. When we eat foods that contain starch, it’s broken down into glucose molecules that we can use for energy.

Carbohydrate is another word for sugar and includes all the different types of sugar molecules, like glucose, starch, and many others. Foods that we eat that contain carbohydrates include grains, such as bread and cereal, fruits, and vegetables.

Therefore, the primary source of glucose for humans is given by answer choice (B), carbohydrates in the diet.
