Let’s use this picture to help us think about subtraction. When we talk about subtraction, we’re talking about less. We’re talking about taking something away. This problem, find 12 minus 12, means that we’re taking 12 away.
On your screen, we have 12 little critters. And 12 of these critters have disappeared: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, and 12. How many critters are left on their planet? None. There are zero critters left. When we have 12 and take 12 away, 12 minus 12, it equals zero.
