On a number line, which integer is halfway between any number and its opposite?

We can start with the number line. We’ll put our zero here. We need to know which integer is halfway between any number and its opposite. So let’s choose an example number. Let’s choose three.

What is the opposite of three? The opposite of three is negative three. Halfway between three and negative three is zero. That’s just one example though. Let’s try another one. Here’s another number line. We can go ahead and mark zero, and let’s choose a different integer. How about negative five?

What is the opposite of negative five? Its opposite is five, positive five. The distance between negative five and five on the number line is 10 units and halfway is at zero. In fact, zero is always the halfway point between any number and its opposite.

Zero is the integer which is always the halfway point between a number and its opposite.
