The number 37 has two digits. The seven in 37 is worth seven ones. And the three digit is worth three 10s. What happens if we add one more 10? Three 10s and one more 10 makes four 10s. 37 plus 10, or 10 more than 37, is 47. We had three 10s and seven ones. We added 10 more until we had four 10s and seven ones. 10 more than 37 is 47.
