Complete the following pattern: the first two numbers in the pattern are missing, then we have four and three.

So we can write down the pattern. It has four numbers and the first two are missing. The first thing we need to do is to work out the pattern or the rule. So how do we get from four to three? We’re counting back. Three is one less than four. So we’re counting back in ones.

So we can record the rule to remind us that we have to count back in ones. So if we started at nine and counted back in ones, the pattern would be nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.

And there are four numbers in our pattern. We have four and three and the two numbers that come before. So we can see that the two missing numbers in our pattern are six and five. So we’ve completed our pattern, which should say six, five, four, three and found the answer six, five.
