Meters

In this video, we will learn how to use meter sticks to measure objects to the nearest meter. Maybe you’ve used a ruler in the classroom to measure objects. Rulers are usually 30 centimeters long. To measure things which are longer than 30 centimeters, we use a meter stick. A meter stick is 100 centimeters, which is one meter long. This guitar is about one meter long. If we place two meter sticks together, we can measure things which are about two meters long. This bed is about two meters long. Let’s practice measuring objects using meter sticks.

Is the table longer or shorter than two meters?

We’re shown a picture of a table. And we have to say whether it’s longer or shorter than two meters. We’re shown three meter sticks placed one next to the other. And this shows the length of two meters placed together. Is the table longer or shorter than two meters? If the orange line shows us the length of the table, we can see that it’s not quite two meters long. So the table is shorter than two meters.

True or false: The height of the giraffe is about four meters.

The pink line shows the height of the giraffe. How many meters tall is the giraffe. One meter, two meters, three meters, four meters, five meters. The height of the giraffe is five meters. The statement, “The height of the giraffe is about four meters,” is false because the height of the giraffe is five meters.

True or false: The height of the tree is about four meters.

The pink arrow shows the height of the tree. Let’s measure using the meter sticks. One, two meters, three meters. The height of the tree is about three meters. So the statement, “The height of the tree is about four meters,” is false. The tree is about three meters.

Is the tennis racket longer or shorter than one meter?

The pink line shows the length of the tennis racket. The blue line shows the length of one meter. The tennis racket is shorter than a meter. We found one meter on the tape measure. And we can see that the tennis racket measures less than this. The tennis racket is shorter than one meter.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned how to use meter sticks to help us find the length or height of different objects.
