Daniel is on vacation in Europe and he needs to rent a car to drive the 320 kilometers from Paris to Brussels. He wants to know the distance in miles. To convert from kilometers to miles, a distance in kilometers must be multiplied by 0.62. How many miles will Daniel drive?

So we know the distance from Paris to Brussels is 320 kilometers. And Daniel wants to know the distance in miles. We’re told to convert from kilometers to miles. We need to multiply the distance in kilometers by 0.62. We have to multiply a whole number by a decimal. For now, we can ignore the decimal. And we can multiply 320 by 62. And we can add the decimal back at the end.

Let’s start by multiplying zero by two. Zero times two is zero. Next, we need to multiply two by two, which is four. And three times two is six. Now we need to multiply by 60. The six in 62 is worth six tens. So we can add a zero, which means we’ve multiplied by 10. All the numbers will now shift one place to the left. We’ve multiplied by 10. Now we need to just multiply by six because six times 10 is 60. Six times zero is zero. Six times two is 12. And three times six is 18 plus the one we exchanged gives us 19.

Next, we need to add our two totals. Zero plus zero is zero. Four plus zero is four. Six plus two is eight. And there’s nothing to add to the one and the nine. At the moment, our answer says 19840. We need to add the decimal point back to make this number correct. We weren’t meant to multiply by 62. We were meant to multiply by 0.62. So we need to add the decimal place here. The correct answer is 198.4. We converted 320 kilometers to 198.4 miles. We did this by multiplying the distance in kilometers by 0.62. This is how we convert from kilometers to miles. The distance from Paris to Brussels is 198.4 miles. Daniel will drive 198.4 miles.
