There are 1000 students in a school. 292 of which are in the first grade and 228 of which are in the second grade. The rest of the students are in higher grades. What percentage of students are in higher grades?

If we want the percentage of students in higher grades, we need to take the number of students in higher grades and divide by the total number of students. We know that there are 1000 total students in the school. However, we don’t know the exact number of students in higher grades. But we do know the number in first grade and in second grade. So 292 are in first grade and 228 are in second grade. That’s a total of 520. So that means the remaining students will be in the higher grades.

So to find the number of students in the higher grades, we need to take the total which is 1000 and then subtract the first and second graders. So 1000 minus 520 which would be 480. So 480 divided by 1000 will be 0.48. So to write that as a percentage, we move the decimal place two places to the right. Drop the zero in front. And add the percentage sign in the back.

So the percentage of students that are in higher grades would be 48 percent.
