The tally chart shows the number of students in a class that play different sports. What is the most popular sport in class?

Let’s recall how to interpret the information in a tally chart. Each tally mark represents one person. Four tally marks with a diagonal line through them represent five people. In order to determine which is the most popular sport, we need to find which one has the highest frequency.

Looking first at football, we can see that there are two groups of five tally marks and then two individual tally marks. This gives a total frequency of 12 for football. Looking next at volleyball, there is a group of five people and then three individual tally marks. This gives a total frequency of eight for volleyball. The frequency for handball, five plus two, is seven. The swimming, it’s two groups of five people and then one individual tally mark, making a total of 11. The sport with the highest frequency, and therefore the most popular sport in the class, is football.
