Count the amount of money.

We’re shown three different Egyptian notes. We have to work out the value of each note and add them together to find the total amount of money shown. Our first note has the number 10 written on it. It also says 10 pounds in words. This is a 10-pound note. We’ve got a 20-pound note and a five-pound note. We could add the value of these notes using our number line. Let’s start with the note which has the highest value. Which is worth more, a 10-pound note, a 20-pound note, or a five-pound note? We know that 20 is worth more than 10, and 20 is worth more than five. Let’s start by counting forward 20.

Our 10-pound note is now the note with the highest value because 10 is worth more than five. Now we can add our 10-pound note. What’s 10 more than 20? It’s 30. So far, we’ve counted 30 pounds. Now we just need to add our five-pound note. Five more than 30 is 35. The total amount of money shown is 35 pounds.
