The word photosynthesis is made from two words. Synthesis means “putting together.” What does the word photo mean?
Does it mean something that a camera takes, a photo? Not exactly. Let’s think about what we know about photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis, plants take sunlight and use it to combine water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air to produce the food they need. The sunlight gives the required energy for this putting together to happen. And the world photo means here “light.” We’re bringing together through the sunlight the carbon dioxide in the water that produces the food that the plants need.
When we think about a camera, the word photo also means light there. Cameras use light to make impressions of things. In both cases, the word photo means “light.”
