Find the unit vector in the direction of the 𝑥-axis.

We can begin by sketching the three-dimensional coordinate plane where the 𝑥-, 𝑦-, and 𝑧- or 𝑧-axes are all perpendicular to one another. We know that a unit vector is a vector with magnitude one. And the unit vector in the 𝑥-direction is 𝐢, the unit vector in the 𝑦-direction is 𝐣, and the unit vector in the 𝑧- or 𝑧-direction is 𝐤.

In this question, we want the unit vector in the direction of the 𝑥-axis. This will be equal to one 𝐢 plus zero 𝐣 plus zero 𝐤, which can be rewritten as one 𝐢 or just 𝐢. Another way of writing this is so that the vector has components one, zero, and zero.
