In this video, we’re going to learn how to sort groups by how many objects there are. These are groups. We have a group of smiley face stickers and a group of star stickers. The digit card number three tells us how many objects there are in the groups. Each group has three stickers. These groups belong with the digit card three.

Let’s have a look at an example.

Mason is sorting pictures into groups. Help him find pictures to go in each group. What could go in this group?

This digit card tells us the amount in the group. The digit is four. That means there must be four in each group. Let’s check. Let’s count the carrots: one, two, three, four. And there are one, two, three, four children. The question is asking us what else could go in this group. Let’s see if we can find any more pictures that show a group of four.

Is this a group of four flowers? No, it’s a group of five flowers. So it doesn’t belong with this group. How about this group of cars? How many are in this group? There are three cars in the group. So the cars don’t belong in this group either. This group has four bicycles, so it does belong in the group. There are four carrots, four children, and four bicycles.

Here’s another example. What could go in this group? This digit card tells us the amount in the group. So we know that each group has three things. So we have a group of three apples. What else could go with this group?

Let’s look at some more groups to see. Does this group belong? There are five flowers, so it doesn’t belong. Does this group of cars belong? It has three cars. Yes, it does belong.

What could go in this group? The digit card is number five. So our picture card must have five things. We know there are five flowers in this group. So this card belongs with this group.

Now we’ve correctly sorted each group according to how many objects it has. There are three cars, four bicycles, and five flowers.
