Jennifer made this hexagon out of triangles. Daniel has only three triangles. What shape could he use to finish his hexagon?

To answer this question, we’re given three possible shapes to choose from. Which one could Daniel use? There’re several ways we could answer this question. Let’s have a look at two different methods we could use.

The easiest way to find the answer is to look at the shape that Daniel has made already and to think about which shape would fit the gap to complete the hexagon. We can see that the shape we’re looking for looks like this. Which of our shapes is the same as this one? We can see that if we take our second shape and we flip it upside down, then it will be in exactly the right position to fit Daniel’s gap.

Another way to find exactly the same answer is to think about the triangles that Daniel needs to use. We know that Daniel only has three triangles. And we also know that Jennifer made her hexagon out of six triangles. So Daniel needs another three triangles to complete his shape. So which of the shapes can we make from three triangles?

We already think we know which shape Daniel needs to use. So let’s just check that we can make that shape using three triangles. Yes we can. And so this is the shape that Daniel can use to finish his hexagon.
