Round 34699 to the nearest ten thousand.

Let’s start by looking at the number 34699. Which one of the five digits in this number is the ten thousands digit. The digit three is in the ten thousands place. And so it has a value of three lots of ten thousand or thirty thousand. And so if we were to draw a number line, we know that number 34699 would be somewhere between 30000 and 40000. And in this question, we’re asked to round our number to the nearest ten thousand. Which is it nearest to, 30000 or 40000?

To know whether we need to round up or down, we need to look at the next digit to the right, the thousands digit. We know that halfway along our number line is 35000, with a five in the thousands place. Any number from this point onwards we will round up to 40000.

So any number that has a five, a six, a seven, an eight, or a nine in the thousands place we’ll round up. And so any number that has a zero, a one, a two, a three, or a four in the thousands place we’ll round down. 34699 has a four in the thousands place. This is less than 35000. And so we need to round the number down to the nearest ten thousand.

And so if we round 34699 to the nearest ten thousand, it becomes 30000.
