Chemical symbols are used to represent chemical elements. Many chemical elements have symbols that are derived from their English name. For example, hydrogen has the symbol H, carbon has the symbol C, and magnesium has the symbol Mg. This is not the case for the element that has the symbol K. The symbol K comes from the name kalium. Kalium is the Latin name for the element potassium. So, the element that has the symbol K is potassium.
