What is the difference between six hundredths and four hundredths?

The word difference indicates that we need to do subtraction, six hundredths minus four hundredths. Remember that, in order to subtract fractions, we need a common denominator. Here, both of our fractions have a denominator of 100. And that means we’re ready to subtract. We subtract the numerators. Six minus four equals two. And the denominator doesn’t change. Six hundredths minus four hundredths equals two hundredths.

After we do this, we need to ask, can this fraction be simplified or reduced? In this case, we have an even numerator and denominator. That means we can divide the numerator and denominator by two. Two divided by two is one. 100 divided by two equals 50. There’s nothing else we can divide the numerator and the denominator by. So this is the simplified form.

The difference between six hundredths and four hundredths is one fiftieth.
