Here are two things Amelia did today. Which took longer? Cooking or football?

To work out which took longer, we need to work out how long Amelia spent cooking and how long she spent playing football. We need to find the difference between the time Amelia started cooking and the time she stopped cooking. The minute hand is pointing to number six on both of the clocks. This means it’s half past something. The hour hand on the first clock is between number four and number five, which means it’s between four and five o’clock. Because it’s not five o’clock yet, we know that it’s half past four.

The hour hand on the second clock is between five and six. It’s after five o’clock but not six o’clock. So, it’s half past five. So, we know it was half past four, or 4:30, when Amelia started cooking and 5:30, or half past five, when she stopped. The difference between 4:30 and 5:30 is one hour, so we know that Amelia spent an hour cooking.

Now, we have to work out how long Amelia spent playing football. The minute hand on the first clock is pointing to number six, so we know it’s half past something. And the hour hand is between eight and nine. It’s not 9 o’clock yet, but it’s after eight o’clock. It was half past eight when Amelia started playing football. And if we write this using the digital format, we can write it as 8:30.

Now, we need to work out what time Amelia finished playing football. This time, the minute hand is pointing to number 12, which means it’s something o’clock. And the hour hand is pointing exactly to number 10, so we know it’s 10 o’clock. And we write it like this in digital format. So, Amelia started playing football at 8:30 and finished playing football at 10.

Amelia starts cooking [playing football] at 8:30. If we add half an hour to 8:30, that takes us to nine. And to get from nine to 10 o’clock, we need to add one more hour. The difference between the time that Amelia started playing football and stopped playing football is one and a half hours. So, out of the two things that Amelia did today, football took the longest. One and a half hours is more than one hour. The football took the longest.
