Jennifer has 71 dominoes. Each one is four centimeters long. If she lines them up end-to-end as shown, how many meters long is the line of dominoes?

We know that Jennifer has 71 dominoes and that each domino is four centimeters long. We have to work out how long the line of dominoes would be in meters. We need to multiply 71 lots of four centimeters. We could partition 71 into 70 and one and then multiply each part by four. First we can calculate 70 times four. We know that seven lots of four are 28. So 70 lots of four will be 280.

Now, we can multiply one times four which is four. So 71 multiplied by four is 284 centimeters. But we have to give the answer in meters. We know that one meter is 100 centimeters. So to convert our answer which is in centimeters into meters, we need to divide 284 by 100. 284 divided by 100 equals 2.84. 284 centimeters equals 2.84 meters. So if Jennifer has 71 dominoes which are four centimeters long and she lines them up end-to-end, the length of the line of dominoes will be 2.84 meters.
