Use the properties of real numbers to simplify the expression 52 plus 𝑦 plus 95 to one without parentheses.
The word parentheses is another word for brackets. We can solve this problem using the associative property of addition. This states that the sum does not change, irrespective of how the numbers are grouped. For example, the sum 𝑎 plus 𝑏 inside the parentheses plus 𝑐 is equal to 𝑎 plus 𝑏 plus 𝑐 inside the parentheses. It is also equal to the sum of the numbers when 𝑎 and 𝑐 are inside the parentheses.
In our question, we have 52 plus 𝑦 plus 95. This can be rewritten as 𝑦 plus 52 plus 95. We can add the two numbers or constants first. 52 plus 95 is equal to 147. This means that the expression simplifies to 𝑦 plus 147. 52 plus 𝑦 plus 95 written without parentheses is 𝑦 plus 147.
