Emma has six cats as pets. One of her cats, Natalie, is pregnant. Write an inequality for the number of cats Emma will have if Natalie gives birth to fewer than three kittens.

We can make 𝑥 the number of cats that Emma has. We’re talking about the number of cats Emma will have after Natalie has her kittens. We know that that that value has to be greater than six, but fewer than six plus three.

After Natalie has her kittens, Emma will have between six and nine cats. 𝑥 is greater than six, but less than nine.
