The frequency table shows the weights of 40 students in a class. How many students weigh less than 50 kilograms?

The only group that represents students that weigh 50 kilograms or more is the last group. This tells us that six students out of the 40 weigh 50 kilograms or more. We can therefore subtract this number from 40 to calculate the number of students that weigh less than 50 kilograms. 40 minus six is equal to 34. Therefore, there are 34 students who weigh less than 50 kilograms.

An alternative method would be to add the four frequencies in the other groups as all of these groups represent students that weigh less than 50 kilograms. We can add five, eight, 12, and nine. Adding these four numbers also gives us an answer of 34 students.
