Which geological structure is represented in this diagram? (A) A joint, (B) a normal fault, (C) a reverse fault, (D) a creeping fault.
The diagram represents a fracture that runs through layers of a rock mass. We need to determine which of the answer choices is represented by the diagram. Both joints and faults are fractures in a rock mass. However, at a fault there has been an observable amount of displacement, whereas at a
joint no observable movement has occurred. In the diagram, on either side of the fracture the layers are not offset. In other words, no observable movement has occurred.
So, the geological structure represented by the diagram is a joint.
