Glucose is a type of sugar with chemical formula C6H12O6. And it’s commonly generated by photosynthesis in plants, where carbon dioxide and water react together to form glucose and oxygen. The reverse process, where glucose is converted back, is a part of respiration in both plants and animals. C is the symbol for carbon, H is the symbol for hydrogen, and O is the symbol for oxygen. Hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen are all nonmetals, so we’d expect them to bond covalently and be atoms when they form the molecule of glucose. So, glucose definitely contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.

So, what about the first statement, glucose is considered to be a mixture? In everyday life, we might use mixture in many different ways. But in chemistry, it means two or more substances mixed but not reacted together. We know that, in photosynthesis, we’re forming molecules of glucose. Molecules of glucose will be held together by strong covalent bonds between the carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. So, we know statement (I) is not a mixture. Instead, glucose is actually a compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen because they’re chemically bonded together.

Since only one of the statements is true, we don’t have to address the last part of the question. If you’re interested, this is how you might draw a glucose molecule. It’s not necessary to understand the structure, though, to answer this question. All we need to know is that carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen make up glucose and there are chemical bonds and it’s not a mixture.
