Write the number that is five less than 10 million. Write the number that is one hundred less than six million.

First, we need to find five less than 10 million. We could start by thinking about what number is one less than 10 million. 9999999 is one less than 10 million. Two less than 10 million is 9999998. Three less than 10 million is 9999997. Four less than 10 million is 9999996. And the number that is five less than 10 million is 9999995. So now we have the answer to the first part of the question.

Next, we’re asked to find the number which is 100 less than six million. 100 less than six million is 5999900. We could do the inverse to help us check if this is correct. So, is 5999900 plus 100 six million? There’s nothing to add in this column, or zero plus zero equals zero. The same thing applies in the tens column.

Now, in the hundreds column, we need to add nine and one, which makes 10. So we write the zero and carry the one. In the thousands column, we need to add nine and one, which is 10. In the ten thousand column, we need to add nine and one again. In the hundred thousand column, again we need to add nine and one. And then in the millions column, we need to add five and one which makes six.

So 5999900 plus 100 is six million. So now we have our second answer. The number that is 100 less than six million is 5999900.
