What is the value of the six in the number 9.265?

So in order to actually help us answer this question and see what’s actually happening, what I’ve done is actually drawn a place value grid. So we’ve got units, then our decimal point, then tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

So now, what I’ve done is actually put our number 9.265 into our place value grid. And we can see that everything is in the correct place. And the way that we do that is by making sure that our decimal points are lined up, which they are.

So now, what we need to do is look at the digit that we’re interested in. And the digit we’re interested in is actually the six because it says in the question, “What is the value of the six in the number 9.265?” Well, we can see that the six that I’ve circled here is actually in the hundredths place value column.

So therefore, we can say that the value of the six in the number 9.265 is six hundredths or it can be written as 0.06. And we can check that 0.06 is written correctly by putting that into our place value table. And we can see it is correct because our six lines up with the six in the 9.265.
